Scott Pilgrim's life is so awesome. He's 23 years old, in a rock band, "between jobs," and dating a cute high school girl. Everything's fantastic until a seriously mind-blowing, dangerously fashionable, rollerblading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and sailing by him at parties. But the path to Ms Flowers isn't covered in rose petals. Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends stand in the way between Scott and true happiness. Can Scott beat the bad guys and get the girl without turning his precious little life upside-down?

Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing!! Comment: This book was amazing!! I cant wait to go pick up the 2nd one. It is very unique and well thought out. There is a basic storyline, but with so many unique aspects you hardly realize it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rock Steady Comment: The Review:
I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World a couple nights ago, and it's probably one of the best movies I'll see in 2010. It's based on the indie comic of the same name, which I've yet to read, but surely will now that I've seen the movie. Scott Pilgrim, played brilliantly by Michael Cera, is a member of the band Sex Bob-omb. Scott is getting over a bad breakup when he meets the girl of his dreams. The problem is Scott is already spoken for. Well, that and to get the girl of his dreams he must defeat her 7 super powered exes. What ensues is part Hong-Kong action movie, part cartoon, part video game, seizure inducing, indie comedy love story. Suffice to say, this movie, like Mr. Pilgrim himself, rocks hard.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a visually stunning movie, topped off by incandescent flashes of comedic genius and some of the best fight choreography this side of The Matrix. I suppose, if we were lame, we could just call it an action-comedy, but trying to hang such a `meh' label onto such a genre defying movie is like trying to put a pair of skinny, hipster jeans onto a Bob-omb. I suspect that there is a very high correlation of people for whom the words "up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select, start" make perfect sense and those who will also love Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
While it works as a hilarious indie comedy, this movie also serves as a love letter to us somewhat nerdy children of the 80s and 90s, who spent hours hardly blinking in front of game consoles. Scott Pilgrim is filled with gaming pop culture references. And after scraping the bottom of a Donkey Kong sized barrel, that is the only criticism I have with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Its mile a minute pop culture references might make it a tad inaccessible to the generations that came of age before the rise of Japanese gaming consoles. So if your parents didn't own a television, forbade you from playing videogames (and you weren't able to sneak over to friends' houses to get your pop culture fix), then a substantial part of the movie might go right over your head. But for those of us who wished that power up filled bricks floated in the sky and that enemies exploded into coins when defeated, then Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a pilgrimage well worth today's inflated movie prices.
FTC Advisory: I purchased my own tickets.
Customer Rating: Summary: Something young adults of all types can enjoy Comment: I will admit I wasn't a Scott Pilgrim fan from the start. I even hated the series; the thought that something tried to cash in on the "video game clique" with the way the movie was looking by its trailers and commercials, I thought SP was a piece of crap that didn't deserve to exist or even be made.
Then I played the game on Xbox Live, then tried to look deeper into it. I have my first volume now, and I have to say without a shadow of a doubt I am hooked. It's really not entirely about video games at all; the references are simply icing on the cake of what's already a great "nerdy" themed book series. Most of the characters are loveable and it helps with the art style behind simple, NEW (I've yet to see anybody copy this type of style/visual look), and keeping me hooked at every page. The story starts out slow but quickly gains steam once the first of the Evil Exes, Matthew Patel, appears. From there it's just a bucket of fun....or perhaps a book of fun. Either way, I just saw the movie yesterday and getting this book today was just the best kind of prize I could have.
I recommend this series to anybody who knows what it was like growing up and wants to explore their youth again.
Customer Rating: Summary: Man, this was good. Comment: I was absolutely hooked from the opening line of the book ("Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler!") and happily rode along until the final page. This could have been a very different (albeit, more boring) book and I still would have been a satisfied reader. O'Malley does such an excellent job covering the nuances of a shoulder shrug or widened eyes that I was interested in the characters and eager to know more about them. This could have been just the story of a low ambitioned twenty-something drifting through life, who starts a simple, comfortable relationship with one girl only to fall head over heels for his (much more challenging) dream girl and how that all plays out and I would have read this without any complaints. Instead, as most folks reading this will already know, the book consists of this story as well as over the top action as Scott has to fight and defeat the seven evil ex-boyfriends of his dream girl before she can truly be his (he only fights one in this volume). Realistic dating-two-girls-at-once-can't-figure-out-how-to-let-the-nice-girl-down-easy angst followed by colossal combat scenes staged musical style. It's a peanut butter and chocolate combination.
Still, I wouldn't recommend this to everyone. If you haven't previously dipped your toe into comic books, video game culture, or shamelessly bombastic martial arts movies then this book runs the very real risk of leaving you cold. If the reader is not in on the joke then a large portion of the humor may not hit home.
In addition to the comic book/video game/martial arts movie crowd, I'd also recommend this to anyone who can relate to being aimless in your twenties, "between jobs," going nowhere in a terrible rock band. This world is portrayed so well (and the transition between this and the crazy fighty fight is as seamless as it can possibly be) that it can bring a smile of recognition--even to someone nearly twenty years removed from such a life--that encourages a reader to follow along when the plot moves from familiar to 64 mid-air hits in one combo awesomeness. Preaching, again, perhaps, to the choir, as long as the choir is willing to keep an open mind.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have purchased the other five in the series and will be reading them in short order. If you enjoy comic books (and can move beyond straightforward superhero stories), martial arts movies, video games, indie films, or self-mocking stories of modern bohemia and are at least moderately intrigued with what the result would be if all of these things were tossed in a blender and thoroughly mixed then I would recommend picking up this book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rating: Awesome! Comment: I bought this book after seeing the movie trailer (I know I bought this based on seeing a movie trailer). This is one of the best books I have ever read! It starts off slow, but soon gets going.
Scott is 23, no job, lives in a one room apartment, and plays video games. He starts dreaming of a girl and then meets her for real. That's when the story gets going.
You should know something about video games and how they work to get this story. I have since bought the next five books, and they are all great too!
